ASI 291 - Special Topics in Adventuresports: A Taste of Six Adventure Sports

Description: Students will study a topic of special interest under the supervision of a College faculty member. This is a course intended to expose students to a variety of adventure sports. Six days of programming will be scheduled. Each day of programming will expose the student to an introduction to a different adventure sport. Examples of areas from which activities may be chosen include rock climbing and rappelling, whitewater paddle sports, biking, Challenge Course with team building, wilderness survival, orienteering, and lake touring kayaking. The specific activity for any given day will be by the prevailing weather conditions and suitability conditions of the venue. Description: Students meet once a month to share information with speakers from the field of adventure sports. Typically, the speakers are small business owners within the field of adventure or work for agencies that offer adventure as a product. Students are presented with information from these speakers and have the opportunity to ask questions about the field.

ASI 109 - Introduction to Therapeutic Recreation in the Adventure Setting

Description: This course presents an overview of services, agencies, and programs designed to meet the developmental, psychological, recreational, and therapeutic needs of special populations. Adventure Sports majors must co-enroll in ASI 194, Adventure Programming for Special Populations.

ASI 194 - Adventure Programming for Special Populations

Description: A course designed to instruct leaders in the considerations necessary for safe and successful programming of adventuresport activities for persons having a physical and/or mental disability. Course will involve students with actual applications through planned activities with disabled individuals. Must be taken concurrently with ASI 109.

ASI 200 - Adventure Sports Program Planning and Management
(3 credits) Level: Theory
Description: The planning, scheduling, and implementation of recreational activities and events are presented in this course. Students will learn through lecture, simulation, and practical experience the procedures involved in developing, staffing, budgeting, and managing risks for adventure sports programs for diverse audiences.

ASI 201 - Leadership and Group Dynamics of Adventuresports

Description: This course is designed to introduce students to the tools needed for planning and operating a professional level adventure outing. Emphasis will be given to risk management, group process, ethical issues in leadership, leadership models, experiential education models, and effective leadership skills.
